God Uses Broken Vessels

I have fantastic news! God uses broken vessels! God loves to use the most unlikely, unqualified, seemingly impossible people to produce great and unusual fruit!! I say unusual fruit because typically fruit produces after its own kind. An apple seed produces another apple tree. There is a logic that comes with the reproduction of living things. The glorious news is that God is able to do all things. He knows all that lies within us and can shape it to use in ways we could never imagine.

Over and over in the Bible we see that He does not use the leaders of the current day to achieve His purposes, he uses the lowly, the uneducated, the average person who is honestly a red hot mess.

How is this possible you may ask? God knows that those who feel the most unprepared and unqualified will be the ones who will seek Him desperately and that is what He wants. Proverbs 18:15 says “The heart of the prudent acquires knowledge, And the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.” God wants people who don’t have it "all together", who aren’t astonishing in their calling. He wants people who will earnestly seek Him and who stand in awe of all He can do even through them.

One of the best examples in the Bible is Peter. God used Peter, who by all accounts was quick tempered, prone to violence, and impetuous. He didn’t think before he acted. Also, when confronted he wasn’t willing to stand and be identified with Jesus after his arrest. Is this the type of person you would entrust with the keys of the kingdom?

Yet, in Matthew 16: 18 – 19 Jesus says “And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” Jesus saw something inside of Peter, past all the bluster and his anger Jesus knew that Peter was a leader. Even knowing the Peter would betray Him three times He still chose him. He knew that very same passionate nature that was, at first, untempered by God could be honed into the very heart that God could use to reach a multitude and could be the foundation of the church in the earth.

What does God see in you that, if honed by His Holy Spirit, could be used to ransom the lost, strengthen the church, and establish His kingdom love in the hearts of man? Are we willing to allow Him to use us even if we don’t see how He possibly could? Are we willing to lift our eyes off of our own broken perceptions and opinions of who we are to grab hold of who He says we are? Are we willing to receive the keys of the kingdom and earnestly seek Him in how to best partner with Him in His purposes?
